What are the best beaches in San Blas, Panama?
San Blas is one of those places that surprises you even if you have already traveled extensively around the Caribbean: waters so transparent that you can see the bottom meters deep, white sands that contrast with palm trees leaning toward the sea, and a feeling of being in a place where time has stood still. After 13 years designing trips around the Caribbean, I can tell you that few experiences compare to sailing through the Guna Yala archipelago and enjoying the best beaches of San Blas, the autonomous territory of the indigenous Guna community on the Caribbean coast of Panama.
The best beaches of San Blas are not the typical beaches with beach bars and sun loungers. Here we are talking about virgin cays, some so small that barely two palm trees fit, others with Guna communities that keep their ancestral traditions alive. There are more than 365 islands and islets scattered in crystal-clear waters, and each one has its own personality.
In this article I tell you which beaches you should not miss if you visit San Blas, those that have been captivating those who venture to sail these waters for years. So stay to discover some of its beaches that will captivate you!
Beaches of San Blas that you should not miss on your trip to Panama
There are many ways to visit these beaches, but at Sailing Life Experience, we believe that the only way to truly get to know San Blas is by boat. There is no fixed route, everything depends on the wind, the sea conditions, and the experience that the crew considers safest and most enjoyable for those days.
For that reason, instead of talking about which beaches we recommend you visit in San Blas or closed lists, we prefer to explain the three main areas of the Guna Yala archipelago, which are the ones visited depending on the weather and the captain’s judgment.
This guide is designed to help you understand which areas to visit in San Blas, what you can expect from each one, and why sailing is the most authentic and most beautiful way to discover them.

Which areas to visit in San Blas?
San Blas is made up of more than 365 islands. Not all of them are accessible and not all offer the same sailing conditions. The crew will always look for:
Calmer waters.
Areas without waves.
Less crowded beaches.
Safe anchorages.
Places without an excess of boats, music, or noise.
For this reason, although there are very well-known islands on the internet and social media accounts, they are not always the best option, especially if they are overcrowded. The real experience depends on the daily weather and navigation. The beaches of San Blas with dreamlike areas that we recommend are:

Dutch Cays
The Dutch Cays are probably the most photographed group of islands in San Blas, and when you arrive you understand why. It is not an island, but a remote cay surrounded by incredibly clear waters. For many people, it is the most impressive part of the archipelago, and to access it a minimum of 3 days on board the boat is required.
Within the Dutch Cays, there are small, virgin fine-sand beaches that the crew chooses day by day depending on the sea conditions, always looking for the calmest and least crowded one.
What makes the Dutch Cays special is that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, surrounded only by sea and sky; it is one of our favorite places in San Blas. The sand is white, very fine, soft, almost like talcum powder and you can find small, virgin little beaches with no footprints around.
You can anchor peacefully far from tourist routes, you will be able to snorkel with living reefs, crystal-clear waters with visibility where you will see colorful fish, rays and turtles if you are lucky. In addition, it is one of the best areas in San Blas for paddle surfing between islands.

Here you will find Ibin’s restaurant, a remote and authentic place where they prepare local dishes with the freshest ingredients. It is perfect for celebrating anniversaries, birthdays or special events on board, and we can help you organize it.
This is one of the beaches in San Blas with sunsets that are the kind that make your jaw drop. The sun sinks into the horizon tinting the water in oranges and pinks, and if you are anchored on your sailboat or catamaran, that magical hour becomes one of those moments that justify the entire trip.
Lemon Cays
Lemon Cays is the most well-known area of San Blas and where the most famous islands are located: Chichimé, Isla Pelícano, which is very popular due to the series Money Heist, and Perro Chico.
These islands are the most crowded with more boats, a higher influx of tourists and music. For this reason, the crew usually avoids this area, unless the weather makes it a good option or the clients have a special interest in visiting one of these islands.

The good part of these cays is that it is a practical area to board if you arrive by land transport, disembark on the return, or take the water taxi departing in the afternoon if that is your choice.
The waters are bright turquoise with shallow sandy bottoms where you can snorkel to see corals, starfish and tropical fish. In high seasons there may be some waves or maritime traffic. It should also be taken into account that the beaches are wide and very beautiful, but with more visitors.
Coco Banderos
Coco Banderos is one of the most beloved areas for those looking for postcard-like beaches: perfect palm trees, white sand and transparent waters where you can see the bottom several meters deep. It consists of several islands separated by blue channels that seem taken from a movie.
Here you can enjoy extremely clear, calm and warm waters, perfect for floating and relaxing. The color changes depending on the light, you can see bright turquoise in the morning, crystal blue at midday and more golden tones at sunset.
You can also snorkel due to its visibility and marine life, as you will discover impressive living reefs. It is a much quieter island than Limón, with a relaxed atmosphere and where you will find small, virgin San Blas beaches.

It is one of the areas of San Blas beaches that most captivates tourists. If you arrive in San Blas by small plane, it is one of the most practical and beautiful areas to start your experience, as it is located next to the airport.
Is it worth going to San Blas by boat?
After all the lived experience with Sailing Life Experience designing trips around the Caribbean, I can tell you that there are destinations that are meant to be explored by land and others that only reveal their true essence from the sea.
San Blas fully belongs to the second category. And the reason is simple: the magic of this archipelago lies in its dispersion, in the freedom to move between cays, in waking up every morning in a different place.
On a boat you do not depend on fixed schedules or organized tours. If a cay makes you fall in love, you stay as long as you want. That flexibility completely transforms the experience. Each day the best area is decided based on: wind, waves, number of boats and anchoring safety.
This allows us to find quiet and protected places, even when other areas have more movement.

Many of the best beaches in San Blas do not have land access nor are they reached by speedboat tours. Only by sailing can you reach those cays where you will be practically the only visitor, where the sand does not have a single footprint and the silence is absolute.
Sailing through San Blas connects you with the rhythm of the ocean in a way that no other type of trip can offer. Every night you fall asleep rocked by the water, with the sound of the waves as your soundtrack. Every morning you wake up and you only have to step outside to already be on the beach.
The Guna community has protected these waters for generations, and arriving by boat allows you to better understand why. You see the extension of the archipelago, the fragility of these ecosystems, the importance of keeping them this way. It is a respectful contact with the local communities made up of fishermen, artisans and families who live there.
From Sailing Life Experience, a fixed route is never guaranteed because it depends on sea conditions. The crew will always choose the safest and most pleasant areas.

If we recommend anything, it’s visiting remote cays, avoiding crowded areas, and enjoying unspoiled San Blas beaches where tours don’t reach, so you can experience the tranquility and beauty of the landscape.
In San Blas, what matters isn’t so much the exact island you visit, but the experience of sailing among untouched cays and crystal-clear waters. The crew will take care of adjusting the route each day so you’re always in the best possible spot—calm, beautiful, and free of crowds.
The best beaches in San Blas are waiting for you. Waters that seem unreal, cays where time stands still, and that feeling of being in one of the last unspoiled paradises of the Caribbean. By boat, at your own pace, with the people you love. Contact Sailing Life Experience to organize your trip!
