100 Years of the Kuna Yala Revolution

A Journey into Guna culture and life with local sailors
The Kuna Yala revolution: a historic milestone
This March, we had the honour of taking part in the 100th anniversary of the Kuna Yala Revolution. This event marks a crucial moment in the history of the Guna people, when, a century ago, they fought for their autonomy and the preservation of their identity. Thanks to this revolution, the Guna were able to defend their territory and maintain their traditions against external influences.
Kuna Yala: an archipelago of history and culture
Kuna Yala, a breathtaking archipelago in the Panamanian Caribbean, is much more than a tourist destination. It is a region steeped in history, traditions, and a deep connection to the sea. This group of islands is home to the Guna community, who continue to live in harmony with nature and uphold their ancestral customs.

Living with sailors and the Guna community
During our time in Kuna Yala, we not only sailed through its crystal-clear waters, but also had the unique opportunity to live alongside local sailors and the Guna community. Sharing time with them, learning from their wisdom, and immersing ourselves in their way of life allowed us to better understand the importance of this land and its struggle for autonomy.
The Guna sailors welcome us into their community, allowing us to be part of their everyday life. This genuine interaction offers a deep perspective on their traditions and beliefs—something far beyond what any standard tourist excursion could provide.

100th Anniversary celebration: a moment to remember
During our stay in Kuna Yala, we witnessed the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Kuna Yala Revolution. It was an emotional and meaningful event for the community, as they remembered their fight for self-determination and their desire to preserve their culture and traditions. It was an honour to be part of this historic moment and to share in such an important celebration.
